WHERE THERE IS MUSIC, THERE IS MAGIC - GIRL AND GIRL

After catching them last month, the image that ‘Girl and Girl’ now conjures for me is Kai James' cream coloured guitar sprayed with blood after slicing his finger before the show. With a cheesy smile and a thumb wrapped in blue, he played on, seemingly unfazed. Active since 2019, the band currently consists of Melissa James – front man Kai’s icon of an aunty – on drums, with Jayden Williams on guitar, and Fraser Bell on bass.

Hatched on the Gold Coast, Girl and Girl have hit new heights after the release of their latest single, "All I See", under a new record label. Sub Pop Records - the same label that signed Nirvana and Soundgarden in the ‘90s- has just taken the band, and their current discography, consisting of 2 EP's and numerous singles, on.

Over the years, the band has established themselves as consistently solid performers. Building on their unique expression, they easily generate a sense of intimacy with their audience, even in crowded venues. Authenticity that any budding artist can admire, you can undoubtedly feel a deep passion for music in their shows.

Like a breath of fresh air into the music scene, their first EP consists of bangers like "Shame It's Not Now", "White Tiles" and "Sex on the Internet." “White Tiles” in particular speaks to me personally, with its polarity, the existential nature of the song expressed in such a casual way. The lyricism stands out for me, as a writer and a musician. Prose like; “Here comes the setting sun, I’m nervous and your lips are something I, would run from” found in “Shame It’s Not Now.” Their following EP, Divorce, has a heavier sense of maturity. Their musical development is evident in “Garden Song” and "Divorce 2." In their new single we hear “I could fix the heart, but the heart is not a home, how things start to burn, when the home is left alone.”

Songs to dance around your room to include “Dance Now” and “Strangers.” They make music for the outcasts, in any stage of life. I think the magic thing about Girl and Girl is that your background, age, and life experience will all completely influence your interpretation of their music. True originals, however, you can find pieces of their influence in RATHammock!, Floodlights and Parquet Courts. You'll also easily identify The Smiths and Bowie if you want to pull some inter-generational references through (which we always do!).

Keep an eye out for these guys! A distinct sound, a unique composition, and a standout voice – this band will quickly steal your heart.
